MDF vs plywood for built-in storage: what should you choose?

Compare MDF and plywood for fitted wardrobes, alcove units, shelves and cupboards by finish, strength, edges and moisture exposure.

MDF and plywood can both be used for fitted furniture, but they behave and finish differently. The right choice also depends on thickness, span, support, edge detail, fixings, moisture exposure and the finish—not just the sheet name.

Where MDF is useful

MDF has a smooth, consistent face that suits painted doors, panels and moulded details. Cut edges require preparation, and standard boards are not intended for persistent damp. Long shelves can sag if their thickness and support are not designed for the load.

Where plywood is useful

Good-quality plywood can provide strong panels and reliable screw holding, with exposed layered edges sometimes used as a design feature. Grades, face quality and core construction vary considerably. Plywood may still need lipping, filling or careful finishing for a furniture-quality painted result.

Specify the finished unit

Tell the carpenter what will be stored, shelf spans, door style, handles, lighting, cable routes and whether the unit meets uneven walls or skirting. Ask which board, thickness, backing, fixings and finish are included. In kitchens or bathrooms, discuss moisture and ventilation explicitly.

Decide from load, finish and location

Start by defining what the unit must carry and how it should look. Painted shaker doors, long book shelves, a utility cupboard and an exposed-ply media unit place different demands on a board. Compare a proposed material together with its thickness, grade, supports, edging and finish. MDF can provide a smooth painted face; suitable plywood can offer useful stiffness and screw holding. Neither name guarantees a good unit if shelves are undersized, edges are unprotected or the design ignores heat and moisture.

Walls, floors and chimney breasts are rarely square. Skirting, coving, sockets, pipes, vents and access panels need to be measured and incorporated. Deep shelves can sag, doors can clash with furniture, and a tightly enclosed outside wall may need ventilation. If a television, radiator, boiler or consumer unit is nearby, required clearances and future service access must remain. Agree whether carcasses are built in a workshop or on site, how boards reach the room, where cutting occurs, and whether walls are strong enough for the intended fixings.

Questions for the carpenter’s written proposal

  • Which board type, grade and thickness is used for each component?
  • How are long shelves supported and visible edges finished?
  • Are backs, fillers, plinths, hinges, handles and internal fittings included?
  • What paint or clear-finish preparation is included, and who applies it?
  • How will sockets, cables, pipework and service access be handled?
  • Which measurements or site conditions could change the final design?

An electrician should alter sockets, install permanent lighting or provide safe media cabling where required. A decorator may produce the final sprayed or hand-painted finish, and a plasterer may first straighten a seriously defective wall. Heating appliances, meters and ventilation must be dealt with by the relevant specialist rather than boxed in without review.
