PRACTICAL GUIDE

Chandelier or pendant light installation: what should you send?

Electrical7 September 2026

How to prepare a chandelier or pendant-light enquiry with product weight, ceiling type, height, access, position and circuit information.

A chandelier is both an electrical fitting and a physical load fixed above people. A useful enquiry therefore needs the product details and the ceiling conditions, not only a photograph of the light.

Send the product specification

Provide a link or photograph of the exact fitting, its weight, dimensions, drop length and assembly instructions. Say whether it is already assembled and whether bulbs, shades or specialist control gear are included.

Show the ceiling and existing point

Take a wide photograph of the room and close photographs of the existing light point with everything left safely in place. State the ceiling height, whether the position is below a loft or another room, and anything known about the ceiling construction. The installer must decide what fixing and electrical assessment are appropriate.

Explain access and final position

High stairwells, landings, furniture and restricted ladder space can change the access equipment and labour needed. Give the floor-to-ceiling height and the desired finished drop above a table, stair or walking route.

Questions to settle before the visit

  • Is the light replacing an existing fitting or moving to a new position?
  • Does the fitting need assembly before installation?
  • Is dimming required and are the lamps and controls compatible?
  • Will decoration or making good be needed around the old position?
  • Can the work area be cleared safely?

Common questions

Can every ceiling point carry a heavy chandelier?

No assumption should be made from appearance alone. The installer must assess the fitting weight, ceiling and available support before agreeing the method.

Can the light be moved away from the existing point?

It may be possible, but the cable route, ceiling access, switching and making good need to be included in the enquiry.

Can LP10 recommend someone now?

The electrical hub shows whether a checked provider is currently listed. Until then, visitors can recommend a suitable local electrician for LP10 to review.
