TV, surround sound and data cabling: plan before decorating

Electrical7 September 2026

A room-planning guide for television, speaker, network and media cabling, including equipment positions, cable routes, power and future access.

Hidden media cables are easiest to plan before a wall is closed, a media unit is fixed or decoration is finished. Start with the equipment and furniture layout, then work backwards to power, data, speaker and television points.

Draw the finished room

Mark the television, soundbar, speakers, router, games console, set-top box and equipment cabinet. Include screen height, furniture depth, doors and walking routes. If a media wall or fitted cabinet is planned, share the drawing with both the carpenter and electrician.

List every connection

State which devices need mains power, network data, aerial or satellite feeds, speaker cable and links between equipment and screen. Product models help the installer consider connector positions, cable lengths, ventilation and access for replacement.

Keep power and signal work coordinated

Do not bury loose extension leads or ordinary plug-in cables as a substitute for suitable fixed electrical work. Ask the electrician to plan power and the appropriate routes, separation and termination for the selected systems.

Allow for maintenance and change

Consider accessible conduits, pull routes, labelled ends and removable panels rather than sealing every connection permanently. Technology changes; access can be more valuable than hiding one exact cable forever.

Common questions

Should the carpenter or electrician plan a media wall first?

They should coordinate the design. Cabinet dimensions, ventilation and access affect the electrical and data positions, while cable routes affect the carpentry.

Can all cables share one hidden route?

Do not assume so. The installer should plan suitable routes and separation for the power, signal and data systems involved.

What should I send for a quote?

Send a room photograph, marked layout, product list, wall construction, desired finish and the stage of any carpentry or decoration.
