A request to “paint the house” can describe anything from two clean walls to a fully occupied property needing wallpaper removal, repairs and several finish systems. A useful quote separates the surfaces, their condition and the finish expected.
List rooms and surfaces separately
For every room, state whether the walls, ceiling, doors, frames, skirting, radiators or fitted furniture are included. Add approximate room dimensions and wide photographs. For exterior work, show every elevation from safe ground level and identify render, masonry, timber and metalwork.
Show preparation honestly
Photograph cracks, peeling paint, stains, loose wallpaper, damaged plaster and failed sealant. Mention recent leaks or damp, but arrange for the source to be diagnosed and corrected before decoration. A new coating should not be presented as a cure for an unresolved building problem.
Choose products and finish level
Give colour references where known and state whether you expect matt, washable, eggshell, satin or another finish. If you have bought paint or wallpaper, send the exact product and quantity. Pattern repeat, dark-to-light colour changes and specialist coatings can affect preparation and material use.
Confirm access and responsibilities
- Is the property occupied?
- Who moves furniture and removes wall fittings?
- Are floors and belongings being protected by the decorator?
- Is scaffolding or another access solution needed?
- Are plastering, carpentry or electrical changes happening first?
- Who removes waste and unused materials?
