PRACTICAL GUIDE

Painter and decorator quote checklist: what should you send?

Painting & decorating8 September 2026

Prepare a clearer painting and decorating enquiry with rooms, measurements, surface condition, colours, finishes, access and preparation listed.

A request to “paint the house” can describe anything from two clean walls to a fully occupied property needing wallpaper removal, repairs and several finish systems. A useful quote separates the surfaces, their condition and the finish expected.

List rooms and surfaces separately

For every room, state whether the walls, ceiling, doors, frames, skirting, radiators or fitted furniture are included. Add approximate room dimensions and wide photographs. For exterior work, show every elevation from safe ground level and identify render, masonry, timber and metalwork.

Show preparation honestly

Photograph cracks, peeling paint, stains, loose wallpaper, damaged plaster and failed sealant. Mention recent leaks or damp, but arrange for the source to be diagnosed and corrected before decoration. A new coating should not be presented as a cure for an unresolved building problem.

Choose products and finish level

Give colour references where known and state whether you expect matt, washable, eggshell, satin or another finish. If you have bought paint or wallpaper, send the exact product and quantity. Pattern repeat, dark-to-light colour changes and specialist coatings can affect preparation and material use.

Confirm access and responsibilities

  • Is the property occupied?
  • Who moves furniture and removes wall fittings?
  • Are floors and belongings being protected by the decorator?
  • Is scaffolding or another access solution needed?
  • Are plastering, carpentry or electrical changes happening first?
  • Who removes waste and unused materials?

COMMON QUESTIONS

Quick answers before you enquire.

Can a final decorating price be confirmed from photographs?

Photographs and measurements can support a quotation, but the decorator may need to inspect damaged surfaces, access and preparation before confirming the scope.

Should leaks or damp be painted over?

No. The source should be identified and resolved before decoration; stain blocking or new paint deals with the finish, not the underlying cause.

Can several rooms be bundled together?

Yes. List every room and surface separately so labour, materials, access and sequencing can be compared clearly.
