Paint and wallpaper create different finishes, but wall condition often decides how successful either will be. Neither product hides serious damp, movement or loose plaster. Preparation should be separated from the decorative finish when quotations are compared.
Why choose paint?
Paint offers broad colour choice and can be easier to alter later. Different formulations suit ceilings, woodwork, kitchens or high-traffic areas. A smooth finish may still require filling, sanding, sealing stains and applying several coats; “just painting” is rarely a fair description of a damaged room.
Why choose wallpaper?
Wallpaper can introduce pattern, texture and a strong feature. Matching repeats, working around corners and sockets, and preparing the background add labour. Some papers are delicate or require a particular paste and hanging method, so share the exact product before the quote is agreed.
Compare the complete scope
Confirm furniture moving, protection, stripping, lining paper, repairs, caulk, woodwork, ceilings, number of coats or rolls, materials, waste and final touch-ups. If staining or mould is present, the cause should be addressed before decoration.

Choose a finish after judging the background
Decide first whether the walls are stable, dry and smooth enough for the intended result. Paint makes later colour changes straightforward and allows different products for moisture, scrubbing or woodwork. Wallpaper adds pattern and texture, but repeat, seams and wall condition become more visible under directional light. A feature wall can reduce paper quantity without reducing the care needed at corners and sockets. Compare the complete prepared finish, not a tin of paint against a roll of paper.
Preparation that can exceed the finishing time
Old paste, distemper, loose lining paper, glossy paint, stains, hairline cracking and poorly repaired chases may only become obvious after stripping. Fresh plaster may require appropriate drying and preparation. Mould or damp needs its source addressed before decoration; covering it is not a durable repair. Agree sample colours or a paper batch before work, because lighting and batch variation matter. For wallpaper, calculate pattern repeat and spare material for matching or future repairs, and confirm whether delicate or specialist papers need a particular hanging method.
Questions for each decorating quotation
- What stripping, washing, filling, sanding and sealing are included?
- Which walls, ceilings, doors, trim and radiators form part of the scope?
- Which exact products, coats or wallpaper installation system are proposed?
- Who supplies paper, paste, paint and an allowance for matching and waste?
- How will floors, furniture, sockets and occupied areas be protected?
- What defects would pause the job or require a separately agreed repair?
A plasterer may be needed for loose or badly uneven backgrounds, while a damp specialist, roofer or plumber should resolve an active moisture source. An electrician should remove or alter fittings where electrical work is involved; a carpenter may repair damaged trim or doors. Keep those repairs separate from decorative preparation so bids remain comparable.
